What is Ultimate?
Ultimate
is a fast paced field sport combining elements of football, soccer and
basketball. It is one of the fastest growing youth sports in America.
Ultimate is self officiated at the highest levels and relies on player
integrity and adherence to “Spirit of the Game”
Spirit of the Game
“Ultimate
relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship that places the responsibility
for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but
never at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to
the agreed upon rules, or the basic joy of play.” (excerpted from USAU 11th Edition Rules)
Self-Officiating
Using
the Spirit of the game as a guiding principle Ultimate relies on
players to make all their own calls and resolve conflicts on the field.
This is true at the local level as well as at the highest levels of the
game. Respect for this process is built into the culture of the sport
and while it does pose its own set of unique challenges, self-officiating is relatively unique to ultimate and makes it an excellent
vehicle for teaching youth about sportsmanship.
